Innovation House is hereby introducing you five interesting, but not hyped Ukrainian startups that managed to achieve success outside the country.

Ukrainian IT experts are good at big data, machine learning, and hardware solutions thanks to their strong training background and engineering education. Even though the country has not so many medical startups, on frequent occasions these fields of expertise are intersected with the healthcare needs. Thus, several projects are simultaneously dealing with cardiovascular system performance analysis and disease prevention using the artificial intelligence, and develop gadgets that monitor the state of the body or help it to overcome the injuries.

Innovation House is hereby introducing you five interesting, but not hyped Ukrainian startups that managed to achieve success outside the country.

Cardiolyse: salvation for workaholics

Cardiolyse was founded by Anna Starynska and Illya Chaikovsky three years ago. The team started with the development of software able to predict the risk of cardiovascular diseases for the people aged 40 to 60. At that exact age the hormonal balance of a person changes, which may lead to malfunction of autonomic (vegetative) nervous system.

Software has become part of a large research program conducted by the University of Oxford and China Kadoorie Biobank in China. The Algorithms of Cardiolyse analyze 400-some electrocardiogram indicators of those, who live in localities with a high percentage of cardiovascular diseases. Other lifestyle-related parameters up to the nutrition are also being analyzed. It is assumed that the analytics and constant monitoring of the state of health will stimulate people to lead a healthier lifestyle and to turn to doctors for advice at the early stages of the disease, when it better responds to treatment. Consequently, the number of patients will decrease and there will be less repeated visits to doctor.

At the moment, Fatigue Risk Assessment Solution (FRAS) is the core project of Cardiolyse. It represents the platform, focused on b2b-users, namely on insurance companies that deal with reinsurance and strife for the scaling back the number of insurance claim payments. For instance, when the accident occurred due to the mistake caused by the overtiredness of employee. Cardiolyse is the very product that may do this at the level of business processes.

FRAS is being used at hospitals and transport companies, as well as in places, where employees work alone – so-called lonely workers. Software analyzes the performance of heart and autonomic nervous system, sleep cycles. It shows what is the state of a person at any particular moment, how far is he from the pathology, and what shall be done to avoid critical condition. All this is being analyzed teaming up with activities of daily living: before and after, just to understand what makes the person lose its energy and power, and how to recover afterwards.

Know-how introduced by Cardiolyse is the determination of thresholds for every user, when the fatigue turns into overtiredness, overtiredness – into worse physical conditions. The more person is tired, the more likely he will make a mistake, since his autonomic nervous system is failing and needs “manual” management of routine actions. If such person works at hospital, this may lead to doctor’s fault, if he is a vehicle driver this may cause road traffic accident and fatalities. When it comes to lonely workers, this may result in expenditures to fix a problem.

When personalized threshold is set, what remains to be done for the user is to monitor his regimen and to live his day in a way that ensures constant normal state and smooth error-free work performance. Companies, for their part, may establish work schedules for their employees to have time for rest.

About 12 persons are working on this project, though the number of employees varies from time to time. Development is being performed in Ukraine. Almost half of the team members are health professionals. Cardiolyse already has some projects in Kazakhstan, Mexico, and Europe. They also plan to implement one pilot project in the Middle East and a number of European countries. Moreover, startup is interested in entering the markets of Latin America.

So far, Cardiolyse is not going to approach the market of Ukraine. And that’s primarily because reinsurance industry is not yet developed in our country.

HeartIn: smart T-shirts

HeartIn startup was founded by businessman Alex Vinogradov and cardiologist Dmytro Fedkov. Startup produces smart T-shirts and sensors that take an electrocardiogram in real time. Project team is located in the USA, Europe, Taiwan, and Ukraine.

5 медицинских стартапов из Украины, о которых узнал мир 5 медичних стартапів з України, про яких дізнався світ 5 world-renowned medical startups of Ukrainian originThe first invention prototype was developed seven years ago. In this May project has risen the required sum of money on Kickstarter and has already produced the first thousand of T-shirts, 200 of which are already sold.

T-shirts are designed for those, who are involved in sports and wish to monitor their indicators, as well as for those, who have or may have heart problems. Artificial intelligence helps to read the electrocardiogram: is performs much of the work and thus saves the time of doctors. The doctor is required only to confirm the definitive diagnosis.

Alex Vinogradov said that the company wanted to make heart diagnosis user-friendly. Special chest-type sensors may make users experience some discomfort and therefore people are more reluctant to use them. But T-shirt looks stylish and does not squeeze the chest.

HeartIn sells T-shirts with built-in ECG-sensors and monthly subscription to the service – in this case doctor will be able to advise a patient in an expeditious manner. T-shirt costs $80, portable device – $170. The cost of monthly subscription is $10. It is quite an affordable price for the developed countries, there will hardly be the enough persons able to pay such an amount in country like ours. Therefore, HeartIn’s major market is the USA, where company is ready to sell its T-shirts both to private users directly and through hospitals as well.

According to Alex Vinogradov, startup is interested in cooperation with hospitals, since the product may be fine-tuned to meet the specific tasks of the doctors. Hospitals themselves are also interested in such kind of projects – in four years the USA will have some healthcare changes, and income generated by hospitals will depend on how often the patients return to the hospital. If the state arrives at the conclusion that the doctor is treating the patient not good enough, then it may even recover all the cost of treatment. Therefore, hospitals are interested in constant monitoring and timely diagnosis of heart problems.

Europe is yet another interesting market for the startup. But this is a more conservative region and HeartIn is going to cooperate there via local partners.

Bookimed: Airbnb for patients

Bookimed was created by Evgeniy Kozlov and Eugen Khotyanov in 2014. Startup helps to find hospitals and doctors that may treat you in another country.

Three hundred hospitals from 27 countries cooperate with the service. According to Evgeniy Kozlov, most of world’s leading healthcare centers work with Bookimed and their number will not grow greatly. Currently the service gets 3,000-some requests per month.

A typical user of Bookimed is a person that either has already been disappointed with medical care or not willing to turn to the “nearby hospital”. Yet another segment – the new one and rapidly growing – those, who annually undergo medical examinations abroad. Hospitals are interested in cooperation with Bookimed because they shift all the informational and logistical burden on the partner.

Bookimed was launched using own money. But in a period of six months it started to get funding from hospitals as a prepayment for marketing services, and these funds helped to develop the project.

Three months ago, Bookimed got $500,000 of investments from AVentures Capital. Money will be spent both for the developments and for the needs of the team. Thus, Bookimed is going to transfer online all clinic, doctor, and treatment selection process. The company says that, so far, they have not seen any similar service, and that they will be ground breakers.

Whirl: no snoring

Whirl company is developing healthcare products since 2016. Nasal Booster is the most famous flagship device. It is meant for the improvement of impaired nasal breathing: it increases the inspiratory volume, oxygen delivery, lung ventilation, and relieves snoring. It may be used with removable filters that entrap harmful agents of 10 microns and up in size. Whirl said that Nasal Booster is the solution for people, who live in the contaminated areas or suffer from rhinitis, allergies or snoring in its early stages, do sports or need larger volume of oxygen.

Maksym Bondarenko, CEO at Whirl, is the inventor of Nasal Booster. He said that he is intimately familiar with nasal breathing problems, snoring, and excess weight. Otolaryngologists, German physicists and technologists, experts in aerodynamics participated in the development. “Material was developed by Swedish technologists, press moulds – by Ukrainian developers. German and Ukrainian doctors and professors were dealing with the efficiency”, – said Maksym Bondarenko to Innovation House.

Independent research undertaken on the device was performed in Ukraine. Rhinomanometry was done in the National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology named after F.G. Yanovsky of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, spirometery – in the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine.

Device is being sold in Ukraine, Sweden, Monaco, and Poland. In the near future, the company will expand its participation in Asian market.

SenceTech: keep the finger on the pulse

SenceTech startup is developing wearable devices that read off heart rate and allow a person to monitor his health. The project has emerged more than a year ago and conducted the successful campaign on Kickstarter and managed to rise $100,000 there. At CES 2017 Consumer Electronics Exhibition held in Las Vegas, startup was awarded in the categories “wearable devices” and “”fitness, sports and biotechnology”.

The team of startup is developing SenceBand – smart band able to analyze the emotional state, physical fatigue and recovery, stress and life forces. Project’s website states that SenceTech was the first company to read off the electrocardiogram (ECG) from the wrist. The accuracy of measurements using this method is 250-fold better than the results obtained via traditional wearable devices.

The emotional state is determined based on ECG results. Description of device states that it can track 64 different emotions. This data is reflected in mobile app. Device can notify the user if something important has happened to him or his relatives, who use this gadget. The device makes measurements at each geolocation for the user to be able to recall what has happened to him, what has affected his state (what has caused the outbreak of unrest, for instance).
