Today Ukraine celebrates the Day of Inventor and Rationalizer!
All jokes aside: our country is famous for the inventions of our compatriots.
Thus, on September 14 we celebrated 78 anniversary from the day on which the first helicopter of Kyiv city inhabitant and graduate of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” got off the ground. And on the same day this year Nobel Prize awarding was held. But this day is also known for the fact that, simultaneously with Nobel Prize awarding, Ig Nobel Prize is also presented. Let’s recall the winners of this year who, frankly speaking, deserved this “reward” owing to their foolish researches.
Marc-Antoine Fardin from France personally accepted the award and was honored for the research whether cats can be both a solid and a liquid. He analyzed photos in the internet, on which cats occupied different storage reservoirs – basins, pots, bowls, – and tried to apply fluid dynamics laws, trying to find out whether the cats getting more liquid or more solid with age. According to his calculations, adult cats are really “more liquid” than kittens. Formulas do not lie!
A team of researchers from Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands and the USA proved that playing the didgeridoo, Australoid musical instrument, helps to treat obstructive sleep apnoea or snoring. We may additionally say that didgeridoo playing at night will help you not only to get rid of apnoea, but from neighbors as well.
Matthew Rockloff and Nancy Greer personally came to accept the prize for the serious research of how contact with a live crocodile affects a person’s willingness to gamble. 103 examined volunteers, having hold dangerous reptile for some time, perceived nervous reaction to the moderate threat as the signal that they could have a stroke of luck in casino. The main thing is not to cry crocodile tears, having brought haddock to paddock.
The prize was awarded to James Heathcote for the medical research “Why do old people have big ears?” It took a lot of time for the British scientist to prove that at the age of 30 ears start to grow in size by about 2 mm every 10 years.
International team of scientists from Japan, Brazil and Switzerland inquired into the matter of female penises and male vaginas in cave insects. Scientists did not come for the awarding of prize for such a lucubration, but they delivered a short video acceptance speech, filmed in a cave. As a matter of curiosity, what were they doing there?
Jiwon Han from Korea did not study hydrodynamics of cats, but seriously studied the issue of how coffee is splashed in the cup, when the person holding it is going backward. Indeed, this is the that particular research that may reverse the world of science!
Team of researchers from Brazil, Spain and Canada went the extra mile to study the issue and to prepare the first scientific report of human blood in the diet of the hairy-legged vampire bat inhabiting Central and South America. For our part we advise to study the chupacabra feeding issue…
Scientists from France and the UK have jointly used advanced brain-scanning technology to measure the extent to which some people are disgusted by some types of cheese. It turned out that separate part of the brain is responsible for the hate to taste and smell of cheese.
It smells slightly of a sensation!
The prize for the study of cognitive abilities was awarded to scientists who seriously wondered whether the identical twins may distinguish each other by the photo?
It turned out that they cannot, and there are no two ways about it.
The last of the prizes – for advanced achievements in obstetrics, was received by Spanish doctors who proved the fact of utmost importance: human fetus responds more strongly to music that is played electromechanically inside the mother’s vagina than to music that is played electromechanically on the mother’s belly. This resulted in creation of the strange product called Babypod. With your kind indulgence we will not attach its operation manual.
